Brief Bio

Dr. Kawai is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the International Business Unit in the Department of Business and Management at the University of Sussex. He currently teaches International Business Strategy (N1083) at the undergraduate level and the Business Context in East Asia (897N01) at the postgraduate level. He obtained Bachelor of Arts in Economics (with specialization in Comparative Economics) at Meiji Gakuin University, Japan and Master of Public and International Affairs (with specialization in International Political Economy) at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He was also awarded with Graduate Certificate of Advanced Studies in West European Studies from the European Union Center of Excellence (EUCE) at the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated with a Ph.D in Managerial Economics with the highest honours (summa cum laude) from the Mercator School of Management at the Universitaet Duisburg-Essen, Germany.

He is also a fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. He has various working experiences in private and public organizations (e.g., United Nations World Food Programme, Sojitz, Deutsch-Japanischer Wirtschaftskreis). He has served as a visiting Professor at the Department of Management, Economics & Quantitative Methods – Università degli Studi di Bergamo in Italy since 2014.


His recent research focuses on corporate green innovation performance, expatriate management, internationalization of Asian firms, female entrepreneurship, and knowledge transfer mechanisms within multinational enterprises.
